ONE MASTER
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)
A restless soul who would change the course of painting forever. Born on 30 March 1853 in Groot-Zundert, the Netherlands, van Gogh came to art late — after working as an art dealer at Goupil & Cie in The Hague, London and Paris, as a supply teacher in England, and as a lay preacher in the Belgian mining region of the Borinage. It was only at the age of around 27 that he finally committed himself to painting.
In the space of a single decade, he created more than 900 paintings and over 1,000 drawings — the vast majority in the final five years of his life. During his lifetime, he sold just one canvas. Today he is regarded as a founding father of modern painting and one of the most influential artists of all time.
ONE VISION
Post-Impressionism — Colour as Emotion
Van Gogh's style is defined by a radical expressive force in colour, rhythm and gesture. During his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole psychiatric asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, he painted Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun in 1889 — a landscape in which a blazing sky, a circular sun and the gnarled silhouettes of Provençal olive trees merge into a single, pulsating movement. Swirling brushstrokes, complementary contrasts of ochre, blue and yellow, and the tangible materiality of thickly applied paint render the work a manifesto of felt reality. The original — oil on canvas, 73.7 \times 92.7 cm — is today held at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minnesota, USA.
Van Gogh did not paint what he saw — he painted what he felt. Reducing to what truly matters.
ONE PRINT
Museum-Quality Artist Canvas — As Close to the Original as Possible
Van Gogh applied his paint in thick, layered strokes onto coarsely woven canvas — structure and texture were an integral part of his work. For this Museum Edition, Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun has therefore been reproduced not on paper, but true to the original on a premium, museum-quality matte artist canvas with a weight of 350 g/m².
Its fine, even cotton weave and anti-reflective surface capture the depth of colour, the brushwork and the materiality of Van Gogh's oil paint in the way that only a true canvas can — from the blazing yellow of the sky to the silver-green of the olive trees. Reproduced at a resolution that renders even the finest details of every brushstroke visible.
Pure material. Pure art. Without compromise.
