ONE MASTER
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849)
A visionary who was never satisfied with what had already been achieved. Over a creative lifetime spanning more than 70 years, the Japanese master produced illustrations, paintings and woodblock prints that would forever alter the course of art history. Born in Edo, now Tokyo, he continuously reinvented himself throughout his life. His relentless pursuit of perfection made him one of the most influential artists of all time — a bridge between Eastern tradition and Western modernity, inspiring generations of creatives from Monet to Van Gogh.
ONE VISION
Ukiyo-e — the floating world, captured for eternity
Hokusai’s style is defined by radical mastery of composition, movement and perspective. His iconic series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji — featuring the legendary Great Wave off Kanagawa — placed the untamed force of nature at centre stage, reducing even Japan’s most powerful mountain to a quiet presence in the background. Prussian blue, dynamic lines and the contrast between stillness and motion created images of extraordinary emotional power. Hokusai did not simply depict the world — he distilled its essence. Reduced to what truly matters.
ONE PRINT
Woodblock print on Kozo — craftsmanship in its purest form
Hokusai’s prints were created using the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock technique: each motif was carved by hand into cherry wood blocks, inked with natural pigments — most notably imported Prussian blue — and pressed onto handmade washi paper. For this Museum Edition, The Great Wave off Kanagawa has been faithfully reproduced on Kozo Natural 110 gsm by renowned Japanese papermaker Awagami. The fine fibres of the mulberry plant — known in Japan as kozo — are carefully harvested by hand during just two months of the year. The result is a paper of museum quality, with a warm ecru tone, remarkable tear resistance and a subtle translucency that makes its organic origin tangible in every sheet. Pure material. Pure art. No compromises.
